DIFFERENTIAL GEOMETRY OF CURVES AND SURFACES 2. Curves in Space

for a < t < b. The entire Section 1.3 of the notes can be immediately reformulated for curves in the space: Definition 1.3.2 (of the length of a curve over a closed interval), Definition 1.3.3 and Theorem 1.3.4 (concerning reparametrization of curves), Definition 1.3.4 (of a regular curve), Theorem 1.3.6 and Proposition 1.3.7 (concerning parametrization by arc length). As about Section 1.4 (tha...

Counting Generic Genus–0 Curves on Hirzebruch Surfaces

Hirzebruch surfaces Fk provide an excellent example to underline the fact that in general symplectic manifolds, Gromov–Witten invariants might well count curves in the boundary components of the moduli spaces. We use this example to explain in detail that the counting argument given by Batyrev in [Bat93] for toric manifolds does not work (also see [Sie99, Proposition 4.6]).

A Class of Quasi-Quartic Trigonometric BÉZier Curves and Surfaces

A new kind of quasi-quartic trigonometric polynomial base functions with a shape parameter λ over the space Ω=span {1, sint, cost, sint2t, cos2t} is presented, and the corresponding quasi-quartic trigonometric Bézier curves and surfaces are defined by the introduced base functions. The quasi-quartic trigonometric Bézier curves inherit most of properties similar to those of quartic Bézier curves...

2 M ay 2 00 0 Transport along Null Curves

Fermi Transport is useful for describing the behaviour of spins or gyroscopes following nongeodesic, timelike world lines. However, Fermi Transport breaks down for null world lines. We introduce a transport law for polarisation vectors along non-geodesic null curves. We show how this law emerges naturally from the geometry of null directions by comparing polarisation vectors associated with two...

QUOTIENTS OF PRODUCTS OF CURVES, NEW SURFACES WITH pg = 0 AND THEIR FUNDAMENTAL GROUPS

We construct many new surfaces of general type with q = pg = 0 whose canonical model is the quotient of the product of two curves by the action of a finite group G, constructing in this way many new interesting fundamental groups which distinguish connected components of the moduli space of surfaces of general type. We indeed classify all such surfaces whose canonical model is singular (the smo...
